Looking for aquatic creatures in Schalkwijk aan Zee

Press release

On Sunday September 3, the Haarlem-Mutare Urban link Foundation was present with a large number of volunteers at the Haarlem Schalkwijk aan Zee festival at Molenplaspark. This year, special attention was paid to sustainability and climate.
With the participation of organizations such as MOOIZOOI (making objects from plastic waste), SUPmission (recovering plastic from sups), DE PENGUIN (catching plastic with an electric boat), GROOTOUDERS VOOR KLIMAAT (climate quiz) and many other organizations Before Schalkwijk aan Zee SUPmission organized its monthly cleaning campaign around the center of Haarlem.

In cooperation with the NME educational center, the urban link organized an exciting workshop for children about life in Molenplas. With more than 25 landing nets, children and their parents enthusiastically got to work catching, observing and drawing aquatic creatures. All animals were released into a large flat tank for close observation. With magnifying glasses and 4 microscopes, the animals could be seen even better and expert volunteers explained the importance of aquatic life.

One of our volunteers summed it up like this: “It’s good to make children aware of the biological richness of water”.

It is vital for nature’s biodiversity and the well-being and use of all inhabitants. Haarlemers (residents from Haarlem) are increasingly aware that the river must be healthy for the city to remain liveable. That is why the Haarlem-Mutare city connection is organizing a series of activities in autumn 2023 in collaboration with other organizations to ensure a healthy river.
