Last Sunday, internationally renowned Dutch cartoonist Maarten Wolterink gave a cartoon drawing workshop for more than 30 people at the Haarlem Comic Days. He creates cartoons for the magazine Vrij Nederland and the opinion website Joop. His cartoons have also been published in the Washington Post and Le Monde.
This workshop was part of the exhibition WATER IS LEVEN by the Haarlem-Mutare City Partnership. Cartoons and visual narratives make complex social and political issues relatable to a broad audience. At a time when the international legal order is under pressure and public services such as water are increasingly being privatized or polluted, we aim to stimulate the conversation about water as a human right through humor, satire, and sharp visual language in this workshop.
The workshop was a great success. The exhibition featuring cartoons about water by 8 cartoonists is still on view until July 6 in cells 14 and 15 of the Haarlem Dome.
Made possible with a grant from the Haarlem Cultural Fund and EU funding via Connect for Global Change by Wilde Ganzen.
