On May 28, 2022, the Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS) is organizing the live Afrikadag (Africa Day) at KIT in Amsterdam! After two years of absence, Afrikadag is back as the largest event over Africa and international cooperation in the Netherlands.

Stedenband Haarlem-Mutare is participating with a lecture on the cartoon project DE ONTMASKERDE MACHT. The project offers a platform to courageous and often persecuted cartoonists. An example is the political cartoonist Ramón Esono Ebalé, who was imprisoned in September 2017 under false pretexts in his home country of Equatorial Guinea and without any trial. His publications include the comic book La Pesadilla de Obi, a fierce satire on dictator Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has held sway in this country since 1979 and is regarded as Africa’s longest-serving president. A lecture on Mr Esono Ebalé’s work will be given by researcher Dr Anita Brus.
Five years after the attack on the editors of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo, and with dictatorial regimes in more places in the world, the importance of critical monitoring of power and the importance of images is still apparent. Stedenband Haarlem-Mutare coordinator Dik Bol will further discuss this with regard to the work of the other participating cartoonists; Jonathan Zapiro from South Africa, and Pedro X Molina from Nicaragua.
During the Haarlem Comic Strip Days being held on 2 to 13 June a further two exhibitions and a number of lectures will be organized. Further information on these events to follow.
