Mushroom Project
In cooperation between the City of Mutare, The City of Haarlem, Environment Africa and the City Link Foundation two mushroom projects where started in 2004.
Aim of the projects is to support disadvantaged groups at Murahwa – Sakubva Township and Hobhouse Township. Through the development of the mushroom projects the income of the disadvantaged are improved. The mushroom production is also an alternative and cheap source of protein (good for HIV/AIDS patients).
Both mushroom projects are financed from the environment fund of the City of Haarlem.
Murahwa
A group of disadvantaged women from the Murahwa community has been trained in mushroom tillage in 2004 with the help of Africa University. With Zororai (housing project for the elderly neighboring Murahwa) an agreement was made for a mushroom tillage shed. The shed has been built in the first quarter of 2005.
Hobhouse
The Hobhouse tillage group has ten members. They till in small sheds on stands of the Haarlem Mutare Housing Foundation Trust.
